The Forth and Clyde canal meets the Union
canal at Falkirk. As it is named the canal starts at the
River Forth near Grangemouth and crosses east to west and
joins the River Clyde at Bowling.
The Union canal from Edinburgh is about 115 foot higher
than the Forth & Clyde canal when they meet at Falkirk.
When it was first built there were about 15 locks which
brought the Union canal down to level at Falkirk but the
locks were allowed to fall into disrepair.
The Falkirk wheel was designed to complete the fall in one
movement. It has proved to be quite a tourist attraction
and some claim it as a workof art either way it is quite
an engineering feat. |
